[02:08.61MARTHA: Hi Alex.
[02:10.11It's Martha Clines here.
[02:11.97James White gave me your number.
[02:14.67I hope you don't mind me calling you.
[02:16.85ALEX: Of course not.
[02:18.07How are you, Martha?
[02:19.39MARTHA: Good thanks.
[02:20.90I'm ringing because I need a bit of advice.
[02:24.00ALEX: Oh yeah.
[02:25.10What about?
[02:25.90MARTHA: The training you did at JPNW a few years ago.
[02:29.58I'm applying for the same thing.
[02:31.53ALEX: Oh right.
[02:32.22Yes, I did mine in 2014.
[02:35.11Best thing I ever did.
[02:36.31I'm still working there.
[02:37.44MARTHA: Really?
[02:38.60What are you doing?
[02:40.00ALEX: Well, now I work in the customer services department but I did my initial training in Finance.
[02:45.80I stayed there for the first two years and then moved to where I am now.
[02:49.79MARTHA: That's the same department I'm applying for.
[02:52.71Did you enjoy it?
[02:54.27ALEX: I was pretty nervous to begin with.
[02:57.01I didn't do well in my exams at school and I was really worried because I failed Maths.
[03:01.56But it didn't actually matter because I did lots of courses on the job.
[03:05.60MARTHA: Did you get a diploma at the end of your trainee period?
[03:09.28I'm hoping to do the one in business skills.
[03:11.96ALEX: Yes.
[03:12.26That sounds good.
[03:13.70I took the one on IT skills but I wish I'd done that one instead.
[03:17.72MARTHA: OK, that's good to know.
[03:20.36What about the other trainees?
[03:22.90How did you get on with them?
[03:25.21ALEX: There were about 20 of us who started at the same time and we were all around the same age - I was 18 and there was only one person younger than me, who was 17.
[03:35.54The rest were between 18 and 20..
[03:38.88I made some good friends
[03:40.61MARTHA: I've heard lots of good things about the training at JPNW.
[03:44.89It seems like there are a lot of opportunities there.
[03:47.85ALEX: Yeah, definitely.
[03:49.63Because of its size you can work in loads of different areas within the organisation.
[03:54.16MARTHA: What about pay?
[03:55.94I know you get a lower minimum wage than regular employees.
[03:59.23ALEX: That's right - which isn't great.
[04:01.92But you get the same number of days' holiday as everyone else.
[04:05.10And the pay goes up massively if they offer you a job at the end of the training period.
[04:09.81MARTHA: Yeah, but I'm not doing it for the money - it's the experience I think will be really useful.
[04:16.27Everyone says by the end of the year you gain so much confidence.
[04:20.20ALEX: You're right.
[04:21.04That's the most useful part about it.
[04:23.60There's a lot of variety too.
[04:25.76You're given lots of different things to do.
[04:28.16I enjoyed it all - I didn't even mind the studying.
[04:31.34MARTHA: Do you have to spend any time in college?
[04:33.76ALEX: Yes, one day each month.
[04:35.93So you get lots of support from both your tutor and your manager.
[04:39.41MARTHA: That's good.
[04:41.44And the company is easy to get to, isn't it?
[04:44.47ALEX: Yes, it's very close to the train station so the location's a real advantage.
[05:20.59ALEX: Have you got a date for your interview yet?
[05:23.36MARTHA: Yes, it's on the 23rd of this month.
[05:26.17ALEX: So long as you're well prepared there's nothing to worry about.
[05:29.53Everyone's very friendly.
[05:31.22MARTHA: I am not sure what I should wear.
[05:34.53What do you think?
[05:36.61ALEX: Nothing too casual - like jeans, for example.
[05:39.95If you've got a nice jacket, wear that with a skirt or trousers.
[05:44.01MARTHA: OK.
[05:44.65Thanks.
[05:46.01Any other tips?
[05:47.84ALEX: Erm, well I know it's really obvious but arrive in plenty of time.
[05:52.44They hate people who are late.
[05:54.44So make sure you know exactly where you have to get to.
[05:57.88And one other useful piece of advice my manager told me before I had the interview for this job - is to smile.
[06:04.50Even if you feel terrified.
[06:06.50It makes people respond better to you.
[06:08.44MARTHA: I'll have to practise doing that in the mirror!
[06:12.19ALEX: Yeah - well, good luck.
[06:14.51Let me know if you need any more information.
[06:16.37MARTHA: Thanks very much.
