　　Describe a person you are happy to know.

　　You should say:

　　Who this person is

　　How you know this person

　　What he or she is like

　　And explain how you feel about this person

　　I’m really happy to know my workmate, Richard. He’s really a good companion, and he sits next to me in the office. He’s about 30 years old, tall, good-looking and very amusing. He’s actually got a fantastic sense of humour and is always cracking jokes and making light of bad situations so he really cheers me up. I know him since he joined our company and became part of my team. We instantly hit it off and got on really well, and have done ever since. Our friendship has developed a lot in the past 12 months, and we often take tea breaks together, have lunch together and generally get along well. Also, we hang out occasionally on weekends because we share many of the same interests: country walks, going out for beers and nice dinners in new restaurants in the city, and taking part in football games sometimes if we can get a team together. I feel great about knowing Richard and I am happy to have a friend here in the city. I’m not from here, you see, so sometimes I feel I miss family and friends from back home. Richard is also someone I can share my troubles with, which I think is an important quality in a friendship.

　　1. Do you think everyone shares a similar definition of happiness?

　　I don’t think so, no. I think that different things make different people happy. For example, a lot of my male friends like sports, but I don’t like them at all. I don’t get happy or excited by playing sports. However, I get excited about plays, performances, music concerts and things like this. So, in general I think that people find happiness in very different pursuits. It’s important to have friends who have similar interests to us, I think, then you can share things with them and have fun together.

　　2. How can children become happy?

　　Children are usually happy when they are playing or engaged in some form of activity. Painting, drawing, creative pursuits like this are important for children. The kinds of activities that promote teamwork, sharing, and physical activities and sports – these types of things usually make children very happy.

　　3. What’s the difference between adults’ and children’s happiness?

　　Adults tend to be more demanding. It takes more to make us feel happy than children. Children are happier with the simpler things in life, whereas adults have more responsibilities and more concerns and so they are more particular in the kinds of things they do in their leisure time that make them feel happy. Children have a wonderfully simple outlook on life, and this is refreshing to see. I think adults are more complex and more fussy, too, about the things they enjoy doing.
