　　In the face of the frequent and often vivid media coverage, it is likely that children will have formed ideas about rainforests--what and where they are, why they are important, what endangers them--independent of any formal tuition.

　　1.词组in the face of sth.的意思是“在……面前;面对;纵使，不顾”，如in the face of reality(面对现实)。

　　2.“it is likely that…formal tuition”这个句子中，it是句子的形式主语，我们在Day 2讲过形式主语的用法，大家可以回头复习一下。这里真正的主语是that引导的从句。这个从句因为有插入语(两个破折号之间的内容)的存在所以比较长，大家在阅读时可以跳过插入语，先把句子读完整，即“children will have formed ideas about rainforests independent of any formal tuition”(孩子们不依赖正规教育形成了关于雨林的看法)。插入语部分是对ideas about rainforests的解释，即ideas的内容是什么。

　　3.endanger的意思是“使危及;使遭到危险”。大家学习一下en-这个前缀，它表示“进入某种状态，使成为……”，如enliven(使活跃)、enlarge(扩大)、enrich(使富裕)。

　　4.independent of意思是“不依赖于……的，独立于……的，不受……支配的”。

In the face of the frequent and often vivid media coverage, it is likely that children will have formed ideas about rainforests—what and where they are, why they are important, what endanpers them—independent of any formal tuition. It is also possible that some of these ideas will be mistaken.
