It is becoming increasingly common for young people to postpone college for work or travel purposes rather than starting their freshmen year immediately after they leave school. Despite some of its potential drawbacks, I think the benefits of the gap year are often greater for preparing them for college learning.

There are two main dangers and disadvantages to a sabbatical period before college. The one that attracts the most publicity is the lack of exposure to academic subjects outside of the campus environment. Unless there is consistent training to review abstract, specialized theories previously learnt, it can be an overwhelming experience, after months of relaxing travels or practical work, to be immersed in complex, theory-heavy reading tasks, lectures and projects in university. A further disadvantage is that a lengthy delay of college entrance may have consequences on students' motivation. If they have grown comfortable with their work or journey, they may defer or even terminate their academic pursuit altogether.

On the other hand, a pre-college break has several points in its favour. The main one is increased independence. People who have earned a solid amount of income from full-time or part-time work can cover university tuition fees without requiring support from their parents. Also, they are probably more used to managing their own schedule and solving practical problems, resulting in increased productivity that is essential for college survival. The other advantage is that industry-specific experience may, in some cases, provide a unique perspective when approaching case analysis. Because people with hands-on experience are familiar with the technicalities and complexity in their own field, their solutions are often more focused and pragmatic.

While pre-college travel and work can be problematic for some high school leavers, I think its advantages often outweigh any drawbacks. They just have to ensure some time is arranged for activating their prior knowledge so that they are better prepared for university.
