Many people today put personal and private information online (address, phone number, and credit card number) to facilitate everyday activities, such as banking, shopping, and socialising. Is it a positive or negative development?

Perhaps one of the most conspicuous impacts that the Internet has had on people’s daily life is the shift from tackling everyday trivialities at specialised brick-and-mortar places to online services, with their personal information put online. While some may view this as a detrimental and risky development, I tend to think otherwise.

Admittedly, it is justifiable for some to be concerned about the safety of such a trend. This is mainly because the Internet, which functions as an efficient medium for information spreading, offers anyone who can manipulate such technology access to hacking into others’ database where their personal and private information, such as addresses, phone numbers, and credit card numbers, is stored. The leakages of personal information thus may incur financial losses of people who lack the vigilance and are trapped in elaboratefraud. However, the above-mentioned issues will be properly addressed, since online platforms are already working on better systems to track and punish illegitimate hackers.

As a matter of fact, storing personal information online is an inevitable trend, which indicates that behind such practice are more gains. The most evident one is that this development brings much convenience and improves working efficiency. In the past, there were either cases where consumers walked around in shopping malls the whole day to look for something eye-catching and compare prices or cases where clients spent a half of a day queuing in a bank to handle business activities. However, with the increasing busy lifestyle that the majority of people are forced to live nowadays, they do not have much time, and those everyday activities can actually be done by a single click on certain websites once netizens have put their information online. In this case, such a tendency suits today’s fast-paced life.
