I'd like to talk about "Hi, Mom", a Chinese comedy-drama film I watched recently at a small cinema near my university in Guangzhou.
I saw this movie about two weeks ago with my roommate on a rainy Saturday afternoon. We were looking for something light-hearted yet meaningful to watch, and this film had received great reviews.
"Hi, Mom" is a heartwarming story about a young woman named Jia Xiaoling who, after a tragic accident, finds herself transported back to 1981. There, she meets a younger version of her mother and attempts to improve her mother's life, hoping it will change their future relationship.
The movie blends humor with touching moments as Jia Xiaoling navigates life in the 1980s, trying to befriend and help her mother while experiencing the stark differences between that era and modern times.
We chose to watch this film for several reasons. Firstly, it was directed by and starring Jia Ling, a well-known comedian in China, and we were curious about her debut as a film director. Secondly, the premise of the movie - the idea of meeting your parent when they were young - was intriguing.
Moreover, the film had generated a lot of buzz for its portrayal of mother-daughter relationships and its nostalgic depiction of 1980s China. As young people born in the late 1990s, we were interested in seeing this representation of our parents' era.
Watching "Hi, Mom" turned out to be a surprisingly emotional experience. While we laughed at the comedic moments, the film also made us reflect on our own relationships with our mothers. It sparked a long conversation between us about family, gratitude, and the sacrifices our parents have made for us.
